Sarah J. Schwartz rediscovered her love of abstract art, drawing inspiration from her background in architecture and product design.
Informed by her training, Schwartz explores duality and dialogue in her work, pushing the boundaries of materials and techniques to investigate their expressive capacities. She finds joy in navigating constraints, breaking rules with particular decisions and curious moments. Utilizing diverse materials like textiles, found objects, tape, and magazine snippets, Schwartz challenges traditional painting norms by choosing unconventional supports such as worn skateboards, wooden trays, and thrifted frames.
Often evoking conversations in contrasts in her work, she plays with light and dark, textured and smooth, ordered and chaotic, colorful and neutral. Her practice transports her to a time and place where she happily releases herself from the concerns about the finished product, allowing a free-flow of exchange between her internal and external worlds.
